Diabetics are many times more likely to be infected with corona-virus, black fungus and other dangerous infections than the general population, mainly due to a weakened immune system in diabetics. There are more than 10 million diabetic patients in Pakistan who are unaware of their disease and because they do not feel the need to control their diabetes, they easily fall prey to infectious diseases.
According to Aga Khan University Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. Faisal Mahmood, diabetics have significantly lower immunity than healthy people, which makes them more likely to get various types of viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Such patients also have a higher chance of becoming seriously ill from these diseases than other people. He said that the severity of the disease in diabetic patients infected with corona virus is different from other people Compared to which the mortality rate increases to a dangerous level while in such patients the risk of infection of dangerous black fungus also increases as the steroids given to them during treatment further reduce the immunity of these patients.
Do He added that diabetics lose the ability to feel pain in their legs, resulting in sores in their legs that later lead to infections and often cutting off fingers and toes. Are "Patients with diabetes should keep their blood sugar within a certain range, while those who are unaware of their condition should check their blood sugar during their annual check-ups," he said.
Professor Akhtar Ali Baloch, a diabetes specialist from Dow University of Health Sciences, said that diabetics suffer from various complications, mainly due to their strength. The immune system is weakening. He added that the incidence of coronary heart disease in diabetic patients is much higher than in the general population, but diabetic patients whose blood sugar is within a certain range are less likely to develop severe disease.
According to Dr. Akhtar Ali Baloch, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes Endocrinology, about 50% or more than 10 million people in Pakistan are unaware that they have diabetes, compared to more than 20 million in Pakistan. They are pre-diabetic, which means they will sooner or later develop diabetes.
"Everyone who has a family member with diabetes or who is over 40 years old and has a waist size of more than 36 inches should have their blood sugar checked," he said.
Leading Physician and Chief Executive Officer of Ahad Medical Center Has launched a project called, under which people who may have diabetes or are suffering from the disease but do not know about their disease can call a helpline and get free help.
"People with diabetes in their family, who are over 40 years old and are obese, should call 0800-66766 for free and check their health," he said. Take advantage of advice, guidance and free screening facilities. He said that the Discovering Diabetes Scheme not only provides free check-ups to patients at risk of diabetes but also provides useful information and awareness regarding treatment.
